MARCH 2009 Summary of the ADC Monthly Meeting

 

 

The African Diplomatic Corps (ADC) held its monthly meeting on March 26, 2009 at the JICA Global Plaza in Hiroo. The meeting was hosted by the Embassy of Madagascar led by H.E. Mr. Jimmy RAMIANDRISON, the Ambassador of Madagascar to Japan. Chaired by the ADC Dean, H.E. Mr. Jean-Christian OBAME, the Ambassador of Gabon to Japan, the following agenda was discussed.

 

1. Welcome remarks by the Host, H.E. Mr. Jimmy RAMIANDRISON, the Ambassador of Madagascar to Japan.
2. Opening remarks by the DEAN, H.E. Mr. Jean-Christian OBAME, the Ambassador of Gabon to the Japan.
3. Presentation: JATA World Travel Fair 2009, by Yasuko INABA.
4. Consideration and adoption of Agenda.
5. Consideration and adoption of the Minutes of the previous meeting.
6. Advanced report/briefing on the TICAD IV Ministerial Meeting in Gabarone, Botswana.
7. Report on the TICAD IV Follow-up Symposium on “Creating Peace Japan-Africa Partnership”.
8. Progress Report on the preparation of the 2009 Africa Day.
       a. Africa Day Symposium
       b. Africa Day Reception
9. Treasurer’s Report: Further review and adoption of the 2009 ADC’s Budget.
10. Any other business.
11. Date and Venue of the next ADC Meeting.

 

On the JATA World Travel Fair 2009, The ADC group was briefed by the JATA representatives, as special guests, on the program being envisaged for the participation of African countries in the 2009 World Travel Fair to be held in Tokyo from September 18-20, 2009. Among the activities being planned by the organizers for African countries, the following were outlined:

     - African Special Zone Ribbon-cutting ceremony;
     - Promotion Seminar on African Countries;

     - African performances for the General Public and
     - Promotional support activities for African countries.


In order to strengthen the partnership between the ADC and JATA in the area of tourism promotion both in Africa and Japan, it was proposed to link the ADC website to the JATA websites. For more information on JATA, please clickon the links below.

During the meeting, the ADC had the opportunity to assess the preliminary outcomes of the TICAD IV Follow-up Ministerial Meeting held in Gaborone, Botswana from March 21-22, 2009 in which the ADC was deeply involved in the preparation process. This meeting was attended by more than 400 participants from African countries, co-organizers and partner countries. At the end, a Communiqué outlining the progress made in the implementation of the TICAD IV Action Plan as well as a Message to the G-20 Summit to be held in London in early April 2009, in connection with the Global economic and financial crisis and its impact on Africa, was issued. The other main issue considered by the ADC group was the advanced reports on the preparation of the 2009 Africa Day in Tokyo on May 25, 2009. For this commemorative event, the ADC is planning to organize two main activities, namely:

    - The Africa Day Symposium on the theme: “ The  Global Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Africa”; and
    - The Africa Day Reception at which Japanese Officials, the Diplomatic Community and friends of Africa will be invited.
